Work from Anywhere

An immersive workspace is no longer limited to a desk in our Towers; the 9-to-5 workday is dead; and the employee experience is about more than ping-pong tables and snacks.

—Brent Hyder, President & Chief People Officer, Salesforce

The sole good side of COVID-19 of the acceptance of home office globally. The latest announcement from Spotify highlighted something that exists for years but sounds brand new for most of us in the remote work topic. Spotify will "introduce more flexibility when it comes to what country and city each employee work from (with some limitations to address time zone difficulties [...])". This can lead to the end of discrimination based on the location of the employees. Can you imagine how it can extend the current boundaries of workplaces? Someone from Africa can work for a Northern European company (if the high-speed internet is/will be available). Another example: someone who lives in the lagging regions of a country could work for a company based in the capital. Is it realistic? It is, and now it seems also feasible. Work from home or from anywhere indefinitely. Shouldn't this option exist for a long in the era of high-bandwidth connection? Well not yet everywhere. In the developing countries, the broadband speed still can be between 4 to 50 Mbps (while in the US the average is 161.14 Mbps, source: Speedtest Global Index).

It is known Mark Zuckerberg founded internet.org some years ago and planned to provide internet to developing countries. Just before the pandemic escalated, in May 2020 Facebook announced the building of an undersea cable to boost internet access in Africa. Facebook and Zuckerberg have their reasons to extend internet users to new continents, but if it also could help the people live there to join in the WFA movements then it is something that worths it. Let's see, and hope to see.

Here is a list of the companies that have already announced Work from Anywhere (WFA) or hybrid conditions for their employees.
